4-Day Lake Natron & Ol Doinyo Lengai Adventure

After breakfast, depart Arusha in your private 4×4 vehicle and begin the journey towards Lake Natron. As you leave the busier areas around Arusha, the scenery gradually changes to open countryside, rugged hills and the dramatic landscapes of the Great Rift Valley.

The journey is an adventure in itself, with changing views of rural settlements, volcanic terrain and expansive plains. Your driver-guide will arrange suitable stops along the way, depending on road conditions and your interests.

Arrive at your camp near Lake Natron and settle in. If time permits, take a short guided walk to an accessible section of the lake to appreciate its unusual colours, mineral-rich shoreline and surrounding scenery.

As evening approaches, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this remote region before dinner at camp.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner, with breakfast dependent on the departure arrangements in Arusha.

After breakfast, set out with a local guide to explore the Ngare Sero gorge. The route passes through rugged rock formations and along a stream towards the waterfall. Depending on the chosen route and water levels, sections may involve uneven ground, slippery rocks and stream crossings.

Enjoy the natural surroundings before returning for lunch and a short rest.

Later, explore the shores of Lake Natron with your guide. The lake is known for its alkaline waters and its importance to flamingos, whose numbers and distribution change with environmental conditions. Keep an eye out for birds along suitable viewing areas while learning about the area's unique ecology.

Depending on local arrangements, the afternoon may include a visit with members of a nearby Maasai community. Through a locally organised, consent-based experience, learn about pastoral traditions, everyday life and the relationship between the community and its surrounding landscape.

Return to camp for dinner and an overnight stay. Guests planning the optional Ol Doinyo Lengai climb should rest and prepare for the overnight departure according to their guide's instructions.

Option A: Guided Ol Doinyo Lengai Ascent

For guests who have booked the climb, the ascent typically begins during the night with a local mountain guide. The route is steep and physically demanding, involving loose volcanic material and rocky sections. Suitable footwear, a headlamp, warm layers and adequate drinking water are essential.

The goal is to reach the summit area around sunrise, conditions and progress permitting. From higher elevations, the surrounding Rift Valley landscape can be spectacular, with views towards Lake Natron and the surrounding volcanic terrain.

The guide will assess the route and conditions throughout the ascent and may turn back or cancel the climb if safety is compromised. Reaching the summit cannot be guaranteed.

After the descent, return to camp for breakfast and recovery. The remainder of the day should be kept flexible for rest.

Option B: Lake Natron Nature & Leisure Day

Guests who do not wish to climb can enjoy a slower-paced day around the camp and lake. Depending on local conditions, activities may include a guided lakeside walk, birdwatching or photography in the surrounding landscape.

This alternative allows travellers to enjoy Lake Natron without the physical demands of the volcano ascent.

Accommodation: Lake Natron Camp, Africa Safari Lake Natron or a comparable property.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meal times may be adjusted for guests undertaking the climb.

Enjoy breakfast at camp and take in the final views of the surrounding landscape. Depending on your departure time, there may be an opportunity for a short walk or additional birdwatching before leaving.

Begin the return journey to Arusha in your private 4×4 vehicle. The drive passes through the remote countryside and Rift Valley landscapes that make this region so distinctive. Stops may be arranged along the way, subject to the journey time and road conditions.

Arrive in Arusha later in the day for drop-off at your hotel or another agreed location. Guests continuing to another destination can arrange an onward transfer separately.

Accommodation: Not included after the adventure.
